Winter Classes

[2/14-3/21]

Elementary

10AM Learning Games with Christa -- In this class we will collaboratively be playing two games. Alba, the first game, is a science game where we will explore the ecosystem of an island and perhaps do some conservation work. In Letters, the second game, we will embark on a socio/emotional game about having friends and penpals and learn how words matter.

11AM Cooking with Anna -- Come join me for another cooking class! I have had the most fun with these cooking classes and can’t wait to do another. I have some fun recipes we will make as we navigate the kitchen learning more skills, how to be independent cooks, and how to make easy meals for our families. We will work on knife skills, handling meat, chopping, dicing, mincing, sautéeing, making a marinade, and more. (9yo+)

Secondary

10AM Native American Heritage & Culture: Iroquois -- In this class, we will explore Native American heritage, with a specific focus on the Iroquois tribes, who were the original settlers of the land in which we currently live. We will explore the way of life, culture, religion, form of government, and the ways Iroquois ideals have shaped America today. (12yo+)

11AM Printmaking: Chine Colle Series of Cityscapes -- In this class, we will explore one process of color printmaking using Chine Colle. This process incorporates thin, colored materials, such as delicate papers and fabrics, as chromatic layers and shapes adhered within the printing process, adding beautiful effects of color, texture, depth, light and mood to black ink prints. Each week, we will briefly explore a different city from our region, around the world, or fiction, through descriptions and images. We will create a foam or cork print-block depicting the cityscape. We will make 2-4 different prints with our print-block, using the Chine Colle method to add color and texture. Our cityscapes may appear in different seasons, weather, times of day, events, etc. Along the way we will touch on geography, culture, descriptive language, etc., and the works of other printmakers and artists featuring cities as their subjects. Block printing with the Chine Colle method provides opportunities for both precision and loose experimentatal approaches, and it is accessible at most any level of artistic skill and experience. (12yo+)

Spring Classes

[4/4-5/16]

Elementary

10AM Ocean Science -- Let's learn about the ocean and all its wonders!

11AM Moomin Printable Papercrafting -- In this class we will share paper-crafting and social chit-chat time as we explore the world of the Moomins. The Moomins are the creation of Tove Jansson (1914-2001), a queer Swedish-speaking Finnish writer, artist and illustrator. They are a family of soft, hippopotamus-like troll creatures that live in Moominvalley and experience many interesting and surprising adventures with other wise, troublesome or eccentric characters, including Hemulens, Sniff, the Snork Maiden, Snufkin, Little My, Too-Ticky, Stinky, and more. The Moomins are appealing and accessible to the very young, but also explore complex philosophical ideas. Themes of connection to nature, independent thinking, compassion for all ways of being, and welcoming diversity are centered throughout the stories. During each class, we will read or watch some Moomin stories or comics, learn about Tove and her interesting life as an artist and author near the Baltic Sea, see pictures of the real places that inspired Moominvalley, ponder wise Moomin quotes, and of course chit-chat while we make paper creations based on the Moomins and their world. (all ages)

Secondary

10AM Banned Books: Discussion -- In this class we will be learning about the practical aspects of banned and challenged books and discussing at least one book that has faced challenges and/or banning. This often is due to themes that some parents may not consider appropriate for anyone ever, when really it's up to the individual families to determine what is right for them. I encourage parents to read the book(s) assigned for this class so they can decide if the reading works for their child. I'm hoping we'll have time to do two books but for sure we will be reading Cinderella is Dead by Kaylynn Bayron. (12yo+)

11AM Study Skills -- In this Study Skills class we will explore various study skills and strategies that will be helpful for both your high school and college journey. We will talk about things like note taking, time management, focus, and more. Learning these things will give you the habits and edge you need to succeed in your schooling. (12yo+)
